The payload refers to everything added to the vehicle beyond its unladen weight, including passengers, fuel, fresh and wastewater, luggage, food, gas bottles and any additional items such as awnings and personal belongings. Managing the payload is essential to make sure the motorhome remains within the legal weight limits, maintains safe handling and avoids penalties.

Typically, yes, but it is important to check the individual model’s towing capacity and remaining payload. Remember that bike racks, e-bikes, extra gas bottles and water all count towards the payload.

Each motorhome has a Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM) figure displayed, which is usually found in the handbook or on the chassis plate. If the MAM is 3,50kg or less, then you can drive it on your standard UK Category B licence.

Yes. In the UK, you can drive a motorhome with a Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM) of up to 3,500kg on a standard Category B driving licence.

This applies to most drivers who passed their test after 1 January 1997. If you passed before this date, you may also be entitled to drive heavier vehicles, depending on your licence. Always check your licence details and the motorhome’s MAM before travelling.
