Do Caravans Need Insurance and MOT? Here’s What UK Owners Should Know

If you’re already an owner, or thinking about becoming one by buying a new or used caravan from Lowdhams, you might be wondering whether a caravan is subject to the same UK rules and laws as other types of vehicle. Does a caravan need an MOT, and is it legally required to have insurance? In this edition of our blog, we’ll look at all of the key points around caravans so that you can stay compliant!

Does a Caravan Need an MOT?

When it comes to the MOT (ie. the Ministry of Transport roadworthiness test), many caravan owners are confused about whether their caravan is required to have one. The short answer is ‘no’. Whether they’re brand new or pre-owned, caravans do not need an MOT in the same way that motor vehicles such as motorbikes, cars, vans and motorhomes do.

The requirement for an MOT only applies to those vehicles powered by an engine. Since caravans are typically towed by an engine-powered vehicle and don’t have their own, they’re not subject to the same regulations. This doesn’t mean, though, that you can simply ignore the roadworthiness of your caravan. It’s still extremely important, and your caravan still needs to be in roadworthy condition to ensure your safety, and the safety of other road users. The onus is on you to ensure that it’s in good working order, especially when it comes to key things like tyres, lights and brakes (if equipped).

For added peace of mind, you could have your caravan inspected to make sure it’s safe to tow. Though regular inspection isn’t a legal requirement, it’s a smart idea so that you can keep your caravan in tip-top condition, preventing costly repairs in the future and, hopefully, preventing accidents.

Although caravans are not subject to the same legal requirements as cars and other motor vehicles, it’s still important to make sure that your caravan is roadworthy and well insured. Make sure you also comply with towing regulations, ensure proper loading and follow good safety practices to stay within the law while fully enjoying time on the road with your caravan.
